Quiet Earth was a project that aimed to investigate habitat loss and biodiversity fragmentation within the urban/suburban environment. The project primarily focused on locations that I had identified as "countryside" islands within my local urban/suburban environment. These islands are areas that include a mixture of undeveloped green spaces and ancient features. The locations were identified through a mixture of walking within local green spaces and in turn, by charting the changing landscape using historical maps, records and pictorial documentation. I am drawn to researching and visually documenting these areas because of the way in which we connect and respond to these environments in the present day and the way in which they can provide a direct relationship to both the past and the natural world. These areas are important, biodiverse sites giving sub/urban residents important access to nature as well asconjuring up ideas relating to loss, the passing of time and speak of the fragility and

precariousness of the natural environment.
