Partial de-materialisation phenomena (2011) photographic print 19cm-15cm.

The transmission lens series emerged from research into historical optical equipment such as the camera obscura, the magic lantern, the microscope, the telescope and camera technology: devices tied to the concept of scientific observation but that share links to alchemy, prophecy and nostalgic entertainments. As a result lens based technologies can be seen as acting as a bridge the art/science/entertainment divide. Similarly darkroom photography is often likened to and act of alchemy or  a conjuring trick, but also has been discussed in terms of the  “eye as machine” and rational observation.

Photographic imagery documenting (pseudo) scientific research, specifically within the field of parapsychology became increasingly important to the project: Late nineteenth and early twentieth century photographic "evidence" depicting occult or paranormal events, such as the depiction of  spiritual mediums producing ectoplasm, or sudden emergences of extra limbs. This imagery clearly linked to a world of superstition, prophecy and theatricality but the presentation and techniques utilised simultaneously borrowed from the “rational” and the scientific.

I set about creating small scale installations combining these (seemingly) disparate elements in order to seek out barely visible connections.
